Local author launches Gloucester Then & Now

See the difference in Gloucester life, landscapes and culture of today compared with 150 years ago in Darrel Kirby’s latest book, Gloucester Then and Now.

Self-dubbed ‘Gloucester boy through and through’, local author Darrel Kirby launched his third book this month, entitled Gloucester Then and Now, and is hoping for the same success experienced with his first two tomes.

Described as ‘an evocative pictorial record comparing the landscapes of yesteryear with today’s busy cityscapes’, Kirby’s latest work explores the changing face of Gloucester over the last 150 years, comparing 45 rare archive images of the city to the same scenes of today.

From the historic docks to the breathtaking Cathedral, King’s Square to Moreland’s Match Factory, Gloucester Then and Now demonstrates the enormous changes that have occurred in these areas and more, whilst also showing that which has remained the same.

Kirby published his first acclaimed book The Story of Gloucester in 2007 and second, The Story of Gloucester’s Pubs in 2010, and is hoping to inspire locals to explore their surroundings and invoke the same passion for the city that he holds.

Each pairing of photographs of streets, buildings, shops and people at work in Gloucester Then and Now is accompanied by informative descriptions and is said to bring the history of the iconic city to life in a unique new way.

Readers will be able to catch Kirby at his upcoming book signings at The Old Bell from 7.30pm on Tuesday 26 June 2012, and St Michael’s Tower from 11am and 2.30pm on Saturday 21 July 2012.
