Blitz at the New Olympus Theatre

6 to 10 November – Catch the chirpy wartime musical Blitz on stage at the New Olympus Theatre, performed by a talented local cast.

The World War II musical Blitz arrive in Gloucester in November.
The World War II musical Blitz arrive in Gloucester in November.

The New Olympus Theatre will be stepping back in time to 1940’s London this week, as the Gloucester Operatic & Dramatic Society performs Lionel Bart’s musical Blitz, which organisers describe as ‘a chirpy story of good old-fashioned British stiff upper lipness’.

Straddling an array of emotions from hope, fear, despair, joy and sadness, the musical brings compassion and humour to London during some of the darkest and hardest times in the capital’s history.

Featuring the ‘Queen of Petticoat Lane’ Mrs Blitztein, a protective Jewish mother with a son in the army and a love-struck daughter, and Alfie Locke a cockney fruit and veg stallholder whose son is the object of Mrs Blitztein’s daughter’s affections, the course of true love runs anything but smoothly.

Lionel Bart may have made his name writing the musical Oliver!, but his lesser known Blitz is a life-affirming tribute to the bravery of everyday people during the Second World War, which remains entertainingly relevant to today’s audiences.

Plus, catching the GODS interpretation at the New Olympus this week is a rare chance to experience a live performance in Gloucester – an opportunity which shouldn’t be missed by local theatre lovers.
