Founded in 1901, Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra has come a long way in its 107-year history, with recent accolades including performing at the Three Choirs Festival in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007. A Gloucester Cathedral concert led by the orchestra and scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 June 2008, however, is set to be particularly special.

Composed by Cheltenham-based musician Colin Decio, ‘The Gloucester Symphony’ is set to be the evening’s highlight – written in reaction to the 2002 outbreak of vandalism at Gloucester Cathedral, and dedicated to the Cathedral and the people of the City of Gloucester.

‘A few years ago there was a local news report which said that vandals had smashed some of the stained glass windows in Gloucester Cathedral. This seemed to me like an assault on the very spiritual heart of the city and as a composer I felt strongly that I wanted to do something creative to right this wrong,’ Colin Decio said.

The new work has been written for a large orchestra, choir, organ and bells, and deals with the themes of defiance and hope.

Guests can also expect to hear American composer John Adams’ ‘A Short Ride in a Fast Machine’, which is expected to be a thrilling piece. While Richard Strauss’ ‘Four Last Songs’ will be performed by soprano Lesley-Jane Rogers who, according to organisers, is renowned for her captivating and evocative performances.

For classical music lovers who haven’t yet had chance to see and hear Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra live, now is your chance.
