Gloucestershire relatives of veterans who saw action in the First World War are being invited to a special Remembrance Day service at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 11 November 2009, with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Following the death last month of Harry Patch – the last survivor of World War I, the national memorial service will be held in recognition of the passing of a generation.

Admission will be by ticket only and in order to make the congregation as representative as possible, a nationwide search has begun for relatives of, or anyone connected with, veterans who served in the conflict from 1914 to 1918.

‘The allocation is based on county population so we can only expect a limited number of tickets’, explained the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Sir Henry Elwes.

‘I expect it to be a very moving and prestigious occasion attended by Her Majesty the Queen and many other public figures and broadcast live on the BBC. I also expect there to be a big demand and hope as many people from Gloucestershire as possible will be there,’ he added.

If you have a connection to the First World War and wish to attend the service at Westminster Abbey call (01452) 425479 for more information about applying for tickets, when you will also be asked to give your own details along with information about your connection with the First World War.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 7 October 2009, with successful applicants receiving their tickets direct from Westminster Abbey.
