Top 10 Gloucestershire objects launch

Event ended

BBC Gloucestershire and museums from across the county have chosen 10 objects to tell the history of the shire, to be officially launched at Gloucester City Museum this February.

Dr Jenner's cow horn is just one of the fantastic objects to have made the top 10.

Today marks a special day for the county, as BBC Gloucestershire and a number of local museums have revealed a list of 10 objects chosen to tell the history of Gloucestershire and its place in the world.

The top 10 list, to be officially launched at Gloucester City Museum on Wednesday 17 February 2010, is part of the wider A History of the World project formed out of a partnership between the BBC, the British Museum and 350 museums and institutions across the UK.

During the launch event, entitled A Night at the Museum, visitors will be able to see re-enactments, talks, films and shows thematically based on the 10 objects chosen for Gloucestershire.

But you won’t have to wait that long to find out which objects have made the cut, as SoGlos.com’s is delighted to reveal the full list:

1. Orpheus Pavement from Woodchester, at Prinknash Abbey.
2. Lawnmower, Stroud, at Museum in the Park.
3. Erinoid Plastic Sample, at Museum in the Park.
4. Birdlip Grave Group, Bronze Mirror, at Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery.
5. Portrait of John Coxwell, at Corinium Museum.
6. Robert Mushet Portrait, at Dean Heritage Centre.
7. Gloster E 28/39 spare front wheel, at Jet Age Museum.
8. The Carne Cross, at Gloucester Cathedral.
9. Piano designed by C R Ashbee, at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum.
10. Edward Jenner Horn, at Gloucester Folk Museum.

Gloucester City Museum manager Andrew Fox said: ‘This is a wonderful, and slightly crazy, way of promoting Gloucestershire’s heritage. We all like to make lists and compiling this one strengthened my view that our local history is as rich and as deep as any in England.’

Representing the county of Gloucestershire in true style, the top 10 list of objects is sure to draw thousands of visitors to the county’s fantastic array of museums in the coming months.
