Ancient Traditions in the Digital Age in Cheltenham
The University of Gloucestershire’s Summerfield Gallery will be exhibiting a interesting series of digital prints, featuring Indian stepwells by photographer Richard Cox.
Photographer Richard Cox has captured a unique insight into Indian heritage in his latest exhibition, opening at the University of Gloucestershire’s Summerfield Gallery on Thursday 18 March 2010.
The digital prints explore subterranean architecture in India from a new perspective – focusing on stepwells, which were built to access to groundwater and retain water from the annual monsoons.
Dating from the 8th century, thousands of stepwells were built across India. While many have fallen into disuse and disrepair they continue to reflect the distinctive styles of their regions – with Cox’s images taken in Guajarat, Rajasthan and New Dehli.
Please note, the dates listed here apply to the opening fortnight of this exhibition. Full dates for this exhibition are Thursday 18 March to Friday 9 April 2010.
