History buffs and local families may have had to forgo their fix of local history for a few months while Gloucester City Museum underwent a major renovation, but the doors of the newly-refurbished city centre venue are now open.

Proving more than worth the wait, visitors of all ages got a first chance to take a sneak preview around Gloucester City Museum on Saturday 7 August 2011, with the museum’s transformation spanning new interactive displays, improved educational facilities, a new reception area, shop, cafe and complete redesign of the ground floor.

Organisers say highlights include the opportunity for visitors to feel and smell Gloucester’s past in a Roman kitchen and medieval street, as well as listen to the sounds of Gloucester gone by and have a go on a Roman building site.

Described as a ‘brand new experience for all the family,’ children will be able to dress up as a Roman or a Celt, make discoveries in the investigation lab or create something to take away in the crafty corner, with toys and games galore also on offer.

From giant dinosaurs and ice age beasts to golden treasures and ancient artefacts, organisers promise visitors will be surprised at what they find at the museum, giving all ages a chance to see Gloucester’s heritage in a fresh new light.

An official opening is scheduled for Gloucester Day, on Saturday 3 September 2011, see Gloucester City Museum official launch for more information or visit gloucestermuseums.co.uk.
