Special Christmas Events at Gloucester Cathedral
With carols, concerts and a special interactive advent calendar, Gloucester Cathedral is set to be a popular destination this Christmas.
While Gloucester Cathedral is a firm favourite county visitor attraction all year round, there’s arguably no better time to visit than Christmas, when the historic venue is brimming with festive cheer.
And 2011 will be no exception, when Gloucester Cathedral once again hosts a full line-up of special services and events, including the following highlights:
What are you waiting for?
Throughout December
Throughout the month a giant interactive advent calendar will be installed outside Gloucester Cathedral. Each day there will be a new window for visitors to look at and ponder, so be sure to wander past at anytime during the Cathedral open hours.
A Ceremony of Carols
Sunday 11 December 2011
Joined by harpist Eluned Pierce, Gloucester Cathedral Choristers will be performing Britten’s beautiful work in the glorious Lady Chapel from 3.45pm. Admission is free of charge and there will be a retiring collection taken in aid of Cathedral Music.

From 4.30pm to 6pm in the Chapter House, Feig, the alternative congregation of Gloucester Cathedral, will be hosting a creative carol service of readings, music and reflection – complete with mince pies and mulled wine to follow.

Ashley Grote, assistant director of music at Gloucester Cathedral, will be performing Messiaen’s great Christmas cycle for organ in this anticipated performance, from 6pm. Admission is free of charge, with a retiring collection.
Carols for All
Monday 26 December 2011
Always a popular Gloucester Cathedral event, there will be traditional Christmas carols and festive music to enjoy and sing along too. Taking place from 3pm, the afternoon will feature Gloucester Choral Society conductor Adrian Partington, Ashley Grote on organ and the Castle Brass band. Admission is free of charge and there will be a retiring collection in aid of The Family Haven.
