Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum reaches a milestone

News – With the foundations reaching completion, officials hope the new Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum will attract national- and international-standard exhibitions when it opens next spring.

One of the first major milestones will soon be reached in the construction of the new Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, with officials saying the ground and foundation works are set to be completed shortly. Work will then commence on building the main concrete frame.

Entitled Building for a New Future, the redevelopment scheme will see the design and build of a new extension to the Cheltenham arts venue, as well as the refurbishment of some existing galleries and public spaces.

Described as transforming Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum ‘by greatly increasing its exhibition, display and other facilities,’ officials hope the Art Gallery and Museum will become a major venue for national and international touring exhibitions when it re-opens in the spring of 2013.

An artist’s impression of what the refurbished venue will look like include a community display space, open archive and re-located Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor; the first floor dedicated picture gallery; and the second and third floor exhibition galleries with six times more temporary exhibition space.
