Herefordshire & Gloucestershire CanalCategory: AttractionsArea: GloucesterThe Wharf HouseOver Gloucester GL2 8DB Telephone: (01452) 332900 Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal consists of 34 miles of canals and locks, providing a number of picturesque walking and cycling routes along what is a historically important local attraction. Work first began on building the canals in 1793, followed by almost 100 years of building during which time the interconnecting waterways between Gloucester and Hereford became an important trade route for transporting coal. Financial pressures meant that 1880 was the last complete year of businesses on the canal, after which time it fell into a state of disrepair before The Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust started restoration work in 1983. Run entirely by volunteers, the work of The Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust means the canals can once again be enjoyed as a day out, while The Wharf House in Gloucester provides a great starting point, as well as being the setting of the restored Over Canal Basin and a dedicated visitor centre.
