Popular Berkeley attraction Dr Jenner’s House and Garden is hoping to keep county children occupied this half term with a day dedicated to our prickly friends, taking place on Sunday 2 June 2013.
And what’s the link between hedgehogs and the vaccination pioneer, we hear you say? Well, Dr Jenner was in fact one of the first people in the world to discover that hedgehogs hibernate in winter, so the venue is welcoming Yvonne Cox from Avon and South Gloucestershire Hedgehog Rescue to teach locals more about the sweet, spiny mammals.
Founded in 1999, the organisation treats sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs before returning them to the wild, whilst also offering educational talks to increase public understanding of them and how to stop their decline in numbers.
Not only will visitors to Dr Jenner’s have the chance to meet these endearing creatures but also roam the rooms and gardens of the place where history was made and a vaccine for smallpox was developed.
Plus, there’s a lovely gift shop, café and picnicking area to boot, so if you’re hoping for a fun family day out this summer, look no further than Dr Jenner’s.
