The Gloucester Tall Ships Festival 2011 promises to be a day out for the whole family, with visitors flocking to the anticipated event at Gloucester Docks this August 2011.

Gloucester Tall Ships Festival 2011 will be in full force from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 August 2011, when thousands of visitors are expected to turn out for the free family event at Gloucester Docks.

It is a highly anticipated highlight in the Gloucester events calendar, following the success of the previous Tall Ships Festivals held in 2007 and 2009, with high hopes that the forthcoming 2011 event will be the city’s most popular yet.

Organisers say visitors can expect to enjoy five historic Tall Ships and a flotilla of supporting boats at the event, with ships due to sail in and dock on the Friday from 1pm and the festival open to the public from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.

For full information about the line-up visit thecityofgloucester.co.uk/tallships directly.

While the festival is free of charge, wristbands allowing visitors on board all the ships and giving free entry to the Gloucester Waterways Museum and Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum will be on sale at the event, costing £5 for adults with all accompanied children aged 13 and under free of charge.

There will also be water craft, live music and street entertainment – including a Jack Sparrow lookalike and a huge supporting cast of living history characters and pirates, performances from the mesmerising Cirque Bijou, as well as family activities and a craft and food market, waterside bars and eateries, a fun fair and lots more.

Only 100 years ago a visit to Gloucester Docks would have seen dozens of tall ships going about their daily business, with crews making preparations before setting off on voyages and adventures to exotic climes.

The summer of 2011 will see the same location – now one of Gloucester’s most popular attractions – transformed to give visitors from across Gloucestershire and beyond a taste of the sights and sounds of the docks as it once was.
