New launch at the Sculpture Trail
20 July – The ever-popular Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail will be getting a brand new addition this summer, when Annie Cattrell’s much anticipated Echo is unveiled.
Open from dawn to dusk every day of the year, the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail – complete with an array of now famous instalments – has long been a Gloucestershire family-favourite attraction. While the last new addition to the trail was installed some five years ago, anticipation is already mounting as a brand new sculpture will be launched on Sunday 20 July 2008, created in Bristol by artist Annie Cattrell.
Organisers say Echo is the culmination of 18 months work, being a wonderful imprint of the landscape in which it stands, created in a gleaming metallic finish. In researching the new instalment, Cattrell was assisted by local geologists, archaeologists, foresters and industrialists, and uncovered a hidden underground world of mines, tunnels and occasional fractures in the strata to reveal minerals and ores.
The new instalment is expected to reflect the character of the area, and appears as if a giant hammer has tapped at the edge of a quarry and released an enormous chunk of precious metal, parting from the hosting stone but still close enough to expose the relationship between them.
Echo will also commemorate the untimely death of the Sculpture Trail’s founder, Jeremy Rees, as well as celebrating 22 years of the trail’s existence, with this launch event being a must for artists from across the county.
