Diesel Train and Bus Gala at GWR
6 July – Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway will be taking visitors back in time for a very special event indeed this July, during the first ever combined Diesel Train and Bus Gala.
Continuing its line-up of special annual events, on Friday 4 to Sunday 6 July 2008 Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway will be welcoming enthusiasts and families from across the county to its inaugural combined Diesel Train and Bus Gala.
Recognising a mutual interest between enthusiasts of diesel locomotives and of buses, GWR’s dedicated team have been hard at work organising the event which will include numerous highlights.
GWR is home to a fleet of heritage diesel locomotives which will be running over the entire weekend, giving visitors the chance to enjoy nostalgic rides between stations at Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse – with diesel enthusiasts relishing the chance to experience this rare treat.
At around 7.10pm on Saturday 5 July 2008, visitors can also expect to have their day rounded off with a Spitfire fighter flyover at Toddington. Weather permitting this amazing aircraft will fly in from Winchcombe and undertake at least two flypasts at an altitude of just 100ft, with the musical roar of its Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine delighting the crowds.
While perhaps the biggest highlight of the weekend will take place in the form of a Bus Gala on Sunday 6 July 2008, when an incredible variety of vehicles can be enjoyed by all. Expect to see Leyland Routemasters, Titans, Tigers and Leopards, as well as AEC, Bristol and Dalmler engines – all lovingly cared for and restored by their owners.
If that wasn’t already impressive enough, Gala-goers will even be able to hop on board buses for a ride in true style, with bus links running from Cheltenham Lansdown main line station to the Cheltenham Racecrouse station, as well as from Evesham station and Broadway to the railway’s Toddington station.
With planes, trains and automobiles all vying for attention at this truly spectacular weekend event, what more could you ask for?
