Tewkesbury is a town becoming renowned for its annual festivals, and the festive season is no different – when the Tewkesbury Christmas Festival 2008 gets underway.

Complete with a line-up of ice skating, Christmas lights, festive crafts, candlelit walks and visits from Father Christmas and his reindeer, organisers boast that there is something for all ages to enjoy in the town throughout the season, and we couldn’t agree more.

Tewkesbury Christmas Festival will continue with a crafty event that organisers say will have participants inspiring envy from all their neighbours, at the wreath making workshop being held at Out of the Hat from 1.30pm until 4pm, under the expert tuition of award-winning florist Hans Haverkamp. Tickets cost £32.50, including refreshments and all materials, and booking on (01684) 855040 is essential.

A drop-in session at Out of the Hat will see participants of all ages trying their hands at a variety of festive crafts, including creating a pomander or cinnamon hanging for Christmas, from 11am to 4pm. With a little help from the experts, the handmade gifts might just be too good to giveaway. Normal admission prices apply, with no booking necessary.

If you’ve always wanted to give felt making a go, now is your chance. Out of the Hat will be holding two sessions dedicated to the craft of felt making, with all ages able to create a hanging decoration for the festive season. The first session is specifically for children from 11am to 1pm, while adults will be given a helping hand from 2pm to 4pm. Tickets cost £5 for children and £8 for adults, including refreshments and all materials, and booking on (01684) 855040 is essential.

Candlelit Christmas walks in Tewkesbury

Candlelit evening walks will be taking place around Tewkesbury on Friday 12 and Friday 19 December 2008, from 7pm. The walks set-off from Jennings Carpet Shop on Church Street, and last one hour, with lanterns provided. Walkers are advised to wear gloves as the lanterns heat up. Places are limited to 20, and tickets cost £2 each.

With a festive season of TV repeats looming, those wanting to learn a new hobby this Christmas, can take part in a circus skills workshop at the Methodist Hall in Tewkesbury. From 11am to 4pm, all ages can drop-in and join the professionals as they teach adventurous participants the tricks of the big top trade, including juggling, spinning plates, poi and hoola hoops. Entry costs £2 per person.

Tewkesbury’s popular ice skating rink will be open once again this Christmas, for some all-weather skating under the covers this year. Held at the Abbey Lawns Car Park in Tewkesbury town centre, the eco-friendly, fully-staffed rink will be open all week for families to take to the ice, with a funfair and hot food to add to the entertainment. Tickets cost £3.50 for 30 minutes skating for all ages including skate hire, available at the rink or in advance from Tewkesbury Tourist Information on (01684) 855040.

Candle illuminations will be on display at Tewkesbury Abbey from 5pm, when children are invited to bring a painted jar, or use one of the Abbey’s own, to add to the colourful Christmas display at the free event.

The little ones will also be able to meet Santa and his friendly reindeer from 12.30pm to 4.30pm the weekend before Christmas, at Abbey Lawns Car Park.
