This summer, children aged 16 and under from across Gloucestershire will be able to swim for free at GL1 leisure centre in Gloucester, as part of a nationwide government initiative to get the UK more active in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics.

Coming as fantastic news for parents and guardians across Gloucester, particularly during the summer holidays, all registered children will now be able to take free dips at the city centre leisure centre, making a saving of £2.30 every visit.

Steve Elway, chief executive of Aspire Sports & Cultural Trust, said: ‘With free swimming now available for both young and old we hope that in the current economic climate this will encourage more families to come swimming, for a great low-cost, all-weather, healthy family excursion.’

Special pool sessions are being introduced at GL1 leisure centre when the scheme officially launches, with both supervised and unsupervised swimming sessions available for young people aged 16 and under at different times during the week.

To take up the free swim offer all children must be registered for a Free Swim Card – with applications available from GL1 leisure centre, Oxstalls tennis centre, as well as online from aspiretrust.org.uk. A registration fee of £2, plus proof of age will be required.
