Mitcheldean Carnival 2009

Event ended

18 July – A highlight on the Forest of Dean events calendar, the Mitcheldean Carnival 2009 promises a whole host of family fun this summer.

Mitcheldean’s playing fields are set to come alive for one afternoon this summer, when the annual Mitcheldean Carnival gets underway on Saturday 18 July 2009.

The day will kick off at 1pm with a procession of floats leaving Dene Magna School, while at 1.10pm the Forest Emeralds Marching Band, A W Parker (Drybrook) Band, morris dancers, stilt walkers and African drummers will set off from The Lamb Inn. Then, at 1.15pm, the Carnival Princess, attendants and fancy dressers are all due to head off from Mitcheldean Primary School.

On arrival at the playing fields there will be a grand opening ceremony while the Forest Emerald Marching Band, A W Parker (Drybrook) Band and morris dancers all perform to crowds.

There will be traditional fairground rides, a bouncy castle and vintage engines shown by the Mid Gloucestershire Engine Preservation Society, as well as llamas in attendance from Severnwye Llama Trekking.

New for 2009, an art and craft area will include artistic blacksmithing with Miss Fire of Harts Barn Craft Centre, a stone carving demonstration by David Bean, yoghurt pot wind socks from Lou Jenki, soaps and bath products from Mitcheldean Soaps and locally-made jewellery by Jane Windsor.

A children’s area will include carnival mask making, stilt workshops, a Be Bike a Lula Sound System Bike, face painting and the chance for kids to decorate cookies.

Last but not least, visitors will also be able to see a graffiti spray-off competition, as two skilled artists go head-to-head in a bid to produce the most impressive spray-painted work of art.
