Back from the Brink at Slimbridge

2 August – Beavers, otters and other mammals once abundant in Britain will be the new residents at Back from the Brink, Slimbridge Wetland Centre’s exciting new exhibit now open.

Back from the Brink is adding an exciting new dimension to family daytrips to Slimbridge Wetland Centre, following the new wetland mammal exhibit’s opening to members of the public on Wednesday 29 July 2009.

Introducing mammal species that were once abundant in Britain to Slimbridge Wetland Centre for the first time, visitors can see otters, water shrews, harvest mice and water voles up close at Back from the Brink – with a CCTV camera also meaning that none of the beavers’ antics will be missed either.

To celebrate the new launch, there will be the Back from the Brink Family Weekend on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August 2009, when families can sit together around the campfire and hear ancient beaver, otter and other animal stories. Otter and beaver hat making, footprints trails and footprint rubbings will also be running on the special weekend, as well as throughout the summer holidays.

Plus, in addition to seeing the latest pupils of Slimbridge Wetland Centre’s popular Crane School going about their daily lessons, letting the children splash around in Welly Boot Land, or taking a canoe safari, at 11am and 3pm daily a new highlight of family trips to Slimbridge Wetland Centre will be the chance to see the otters being fed.

WWT Slimbridge spokesperson Veronica Morris said: ‘Slimbridge will be one of very few attractions in the UK where visitors can watch beavers in their natural habitat and we hope that it will engage the public in important conservation issues such as wetland habitat loss, species decline and extinction and the potential reintroduction of once native species like the beaver back into the British landscape.’

Back from the Brink has taken over six months to complete and includes a viewing gallery built using the ancient cob building art of mixing earth, straw, water and sand together. Plus, there is also a Mesolithic camp equipped with a tree house and fire pit as part of the new exhibit.
