While most of us return from holidays abroad with a few snaps of the family looking a bit sunburnt, having had one too many cocktails in the hotel bar or showing off our best cheesy smile on the local beach, Mick Maslen’s photos – all taken during holidays abroad since 2002 – reflect a wide range of cultures in locations around the world.
A lecturer in painting and drawing at the University of Gloucestershire, Maslen’s photos on show at the Cornium Museum this spring take in people, landscapes and architecture in everywhere from Berlin, Florence and Rome to Marrakech, Istanbul, New York and Havana.
‘What I like about photographs is that they have their own language. You are able to look through a lens, select a frame and then isolate it, and then share the seen moment in time – which is wonderful’, said the exhibiting artist Mick Maslen.
Many of the photographs on show were taken in the old colonial area of Havana known as La Habana Vieja – an area besieged by time, a city of ruins where the propped-up building, crumbling plaster and peeling paint reveal a century of neglect – with friendly faces appearing from the holes with nothing to do but watch the day go by.
Far from your average holiday snaps, visitors to the City Break exhibition at the Corinium Museum can expect to find a rich insight into diverse cultures through the eyes of this talented photographer.
