The exceptionally popular Cheltenham Concert Series returns to Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 17 September 2011, with a performance from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Launching the new autumn series in style, classic music lovers will enjoy a programme spanning ‘Les Offrandes Oubliées’, which organisers describe as a musical triptych in which Messiaen displays his strong spiritual convictions.
The French theme is set to continue during the live Cheltenham concert with ‘Cello Concerto No.1, A minor’, a work by Saint-Saëns featuring soloist Steven Isserlis – who is described as one of Britain’s leading cellists and a favourite with local concert-goers.
And last, but not least, Sibelius’ mighty ‘Symphony No.2 in D major’ will provide plenty of passion and intensity – all presided over by Scandinavian conductor Thomas Søndergärd who will be making his Cheltenham debut.
