Enjoy an evocative story about the Battle of Rorke’s Drift from Rob Caskie, with canapés and a three-course dinner to boot, at Cheltenham’s prestigious Ellenborough Park.

Ellenborough Park will be commemorating the famous Battle of Rorke’s Drift with a special evening event this Tuesday 18 October 2011, featuring a gripping talk by internationally recognised historian and speaker Rob Caskie.

Organisers say this exclusive event will allow guests to experience a documented recollection of the prolific 19th century battle which took place during the Anglo-Zulu war, and saw the greatest number of Victoria Crosses awarded in a single conflict.

Relics from The Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh will be on display on the evening, honouring the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift by a Welsh regiment against an onslaught of Zulu warriors in a conflict which was reportedly hailed as the restoration of the British Army’s reputation.

Rob Caskie was born in KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and served with the Zulu troops during his national service. His rich background is said to help him recount the historical battles, bringing inspirational and evocative stories to life with passion and enthusiasm.

Amateur historians, anyone connected to the famous battles through relatives or those with an ear for a good story are sure to enjoy the evening – which will also include a drinks reception with canapés followed by a three-course dinner in The Beaufort Dining Room. Head chef David Kelman has even devised a fine dining adaptation of what would have been found in the Anglo-Zulu war soldiers’ ration packs for the pre-starter.

A perfect opportunity to visit the new Ellenborough Park if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of doing so.
