Discover the secrets of the past and get digging at the first archaeology summer school, to be held at Dr Jenner’s House in Berkeley.

Have you ever dreamed of digging deep and discovering secrets of the past? If so, this year could be the perfect time for you to try your hand at archaeology, when the team at Dr Jenner’s House and Garden open their doors to the public for their first ever summer school.

Visitors will have the rare opportunity to dig with qualified archaeologists in garden of vaccination pioneer, Dr Jenner, during two summer school sessions: an under 18s school that will run from Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 July 2012, and an over 18s school to be held on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July 2012.

As part of the 2012 Festival of British Archaeology, the summer schools will offer participants the chance to excavate a trench, survey the site and process finds, just like the professionals, with no previous experience needed.

Organisers assure readers that full instruction, supervision, equipment and hot drinks will be provided to ensure a safe but exciting dig for all. They ask that all you bring is a waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, a hat and sunscreen – to account for all weather eventualities.

Time Team fans are encouraged to book early, as spaces are limited to 20 per day, and organisers can even arrange special packages for families wishing to dig together.
