Cheltenham’s prestigious Cowley Manor has announced the winner of its unique and inspiring sculpture competition, The Coutts Cowley Manor Arts Award, which sees the opening of the Royal College of Art exhibition to the public from Thursday 3 May 2012.
In partnership with private bank Coutts, Cowley revealed the winner of the coveted award to be Korean artist Wonwoo Lee with his three-metre steel sign interpretation entitled Hey – which will take up permanent residence within the 55 acres of grade II listed gardens.
The competition was open to postgraduates from the famous Royal College of Art, and of the 27 submitted concepts, eight have been awarded funding to bring their designs to life and be placed throughout the grounds until Sunday 30 September 2012.
These include an 8ft tall wire Tornado from Ben Fowlers, underwater mirrored balls from Claire Poulter, and even carrot trousers cast in brass from Emma Alonze.
The brief was to interpret Cowley Manor and its rich history, grounds and reputed contemporary design – with the judging panel comprising of local art collectors, artists and entrepreneurs hand-picked by Cowley and Coutts.
Organisers are promising nothing less than a unique day out for the whole family, with the opportunity for hotel guests and picnic-goers alike to enjoy the full splendour of Cowley and its exhibition, whilst bagging a bargain in the private sales that will also be offer.
