Explore times gone by during the BBC Gloucestershire History Day, with an appearance from TV historian Michael Wood, film screenings, living history displays and more, in and around the city centre.

History buffs from Gloucester and beyond are expected to flock to the city centre on Saturday 7 July 2012 for a prestigious day-long celebration of Britain’s heritage, the BBC Great Gloucestershire History Day, which forms part of popular BBC Learning Project The Great British Story: A People’s History.

Taking place across various venues, including Gloucester City and Folk Museums, St Michael’s Tower, Gloucester Guildhall, Blackfriars and St Mary de Crypt, visitors can look forward to a free cultural day of talks, living history displays, practical advice for family historians, heritage tours and walks, and more.

The highlight of the day is set to be an appearance from leading TV historian, writer and broadcaster Michael Wood, who has been bringing the past to life for millions during the past three decades in programmes including Michael Wood’s Story of England, Great Railway Journeys and The Great British Story: A People’s History.

Wood will be joined on the Gloucester Guildhall stage by TV archaeologist Julian Richards from Meet the Ancestors, genealogist Nick Barratt from Who Do You Think You Are?, and The One Show’s architectural historian Jonathan Foyle.

What’s more, the popular venue will also be taking a look back at Gloucestershire on film over the last century, in a series of screenings that will feature archive footage from the vaults of the BBC, British Pathe and the Gloucester Film Makers.

Trish Campbell, event organiser from BBC Learning said: ‘The aim of the Great Gloucestershire History Day is to look at our past through the eyes of ordinary people with plenty of entertaining things to see, do and take part in.’
