Holst Birthplace Museum unveils exhibition painting

Holst Birthplace Museum in Cheltenham will unveil its newest portrait this February, a painting of Holst's wife Isobel by British artist Millicent Woodforde.

Holst Birthplace Museum will unveil a new exhibition painting on Friday 17 February 2017, a portrait of Holst’s wife Isobel which was purchased at auction in May 2016.

Available for public viewing from Saturday 18 February 2017, the 20th century piece was painted by British artist and close friend of the family, Millicent Woodforde, whose work also includes a portrait of Gustav Holst, on display in the National Portrait Gallery London.

The latest artwork to go on show at Holst Birthplace Museum, thanks to support from the Art Fund and local donors, the piece is often referred to as one of the ‘Barnes Paintings’, referring to where the Holst family lived at the time.

Holst’s newest exhibition painting marks an impressive coup for the Cheltenham museum, which has recently undergone refurbishment following a flood.

Talking about the unveiling, museum curator Laura Kinnear said: ‘The Isobel Holst portrait is a very attractive, sensuous painting and we are very much looking forward to having it on public show. It will take pride of place in our newly refurbished rooms, now revitalised and reopen following the flood damage earlier this summer.’
