Cheltenham Film Society screenings

Event ended

The Cheltenham Film Society’s 64th season of screenings showing at Bacon Theatre until spring 2010, is sure to prove popular with film fans from across Gloucestershire.

Cheltenham Film Society will be showing Tokyo Sonata this February 2010.
Cheltenham Film Society will be showing Tokyo Sonata this February 2010.

Cheltenham Film Society’s 64th season of screenings promises film enthusiasts a not-to-be-missed line-up of world cinema, with the bar open before and after screenings to give members the chance to chat and talk about screenings past, present and future.

When the Cheltenham Film Society first launched in 1945, membership numbers reached a staggering 1,100 people making it the fifth largest in the UK. The opening show was held at the Daffodil Cinema – which is now The Daffodil restaurant – before the society made Dean Close School its new home.

Dean Close School still plays host to the Cheltenham Film Society in the form of the Bacon Theatre, with membership now at around 300. But if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, it’s the society’s dedication to the very best of the silver screen.

Cheltenham Film Society welcomes new members and at £28 for a full-season membership, or £20 for young people aged 16 to 21, is an absolute must for discerning fans of world cinema.

The Class

Tuesday 9 February 2010

The gritty, award-winning, French drama based on François Bégaudeau’s best-selling novel is set in a tough inner-city school where cultures and attitudes clash and unruly 15 year-olds challenge one man’s often unconventional teaching methods.

The Wave

Tuesday 16 March 2010

A high school teacher takes the controversial decision to turn the classroom into a Nazi-style dictatorship in an attempt to engage his students, but what starts out as an innocent social experiment ends in tragedy and the notions of discipline and community give way to more sinister ideals.

12:08 East of Bucharest

Tuesday 30 March 2010

The quirky final screening for this season’s Cheltenham Film Society films comes from Romania, where it’s been 16 years since the Revolution and in a context of Post-Communist life a band of retirees are trying to work out whether a revolution really take place in their city.
