Film fans from miles around will be attending Stroud Film Society’s 52 season of screenings at The British School in Stroud, when a diverse range of cinematic gems – including gripping documentaries, powerful drama and world cinema – will be shown.

Until March 2010 the popular group, which is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies, will be offering the chance to be entertained, moved and sometimes challenged by its latest collection of cinematic treats.

Screenings are held fortnightly on a Wednesday evening, when filmgoers have the chance to relax with a cup of tea or coffee before the 8pm screening commences.

Lemon Tree

Wednesday 3 March 2010

This Israeli-drama is based on the true story of Salma, a Palestinian widow who has lived on the border between Israel and the West Bank for decades. When the new Israeli Defence Minister moves in next door, the Israeli security forces declare her lemon grove a threat to his safety and issue orders to have it uprooted, which Salma’s grit and determination interferes with.

Belleville Rendezvous

Wednesday 24 March 2010

Director Sylvain Chomet’s animated film ends the 52 season of film with French finesse – showing Champion a melancholy child, who lives with his grandmother Madame Souza, and obese dog Bruno. Organisers say she discovers that the boy’s one love is cycling and sets about making him the best cyclist ever ready for the Tour De France, until the Mafia intervenes.
