Gloucestershire filmmaker Mark Playne is making waves across the ocean with his latest short film Love at First Sight, which is due to be screened at the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival on Thursday 21 June 2012 – along with a selection of 30 shorts out of several thousand entered.
Having already been well-received at several other film festivals across three continents, Playne is hoping for an equally successful reception in Shanghai, which is reported to be the biggest film festival in China with an anticipated audience of 200,000.
Love at First Sight is a silent film based on a true experience by the Stroud-born writer-director whilst living in Spain. It portrays his increasingly creative attempts to attract the attention of the girl of his dreams, in what has been described as a gentle film of hope and optimism.
Despite winning three awards to date overseas, including Best Short Film at Greece’s Corinth WCD International Film Festival, Best Director at the Hollywood Feel Food Film Festival, and the Audience Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the film has yet to be screened in the UK.
Playne said: ‘I’m very appreciative and excited about having been invited to Shanghai, however, my real dream right now would be a local UK screening: to be able to just to pop down the M5 from Stroud to Bristol or Bath with all the people that have supported me over the years and see the film amongst friends and a Brit crowd, hearing them react to this little story we’ve made.’
He added: ‘I set out to make the film to work for international audiences in far flung countries. I have always found subtitles distracting and somehow distancing from the characters, so made the film without dialogue so that no-one should feel the film is foreign.’
Here’s hoping this international flick with a local connection is earmarked for a UK screening in the near future.
