Celebrate national Black History Month by watching the Harry Belafonte documentary Sing Your Song on the Gloucester Guildhall big screen.

Supporting the UK-wide cultural celebration that is Black History Month, Gloucester Guildhall will be showing a one-off screening of the Harry Belafonte documentary Sing Your Song, on Monday 8 October 2012.

Held every October, Black History Month aims to promote knowledge of black history, culture and heritage, disseminate information on positive black contributions to British society and heighten the confidence and awareness of black people to their cultural heritage.

According to organisers, from its roots in America in 1926, Britain’s contribution to the movement has grown year-on-year, spanning more than 6,000 associated events today – including Gloucester Guildhall’s own annual film screening.

Sing Your Song is a documentary-style movie not only about, but also narrated by American singer and social activist, Harry Belafonte. It unearths his contribution to and leadership in the American civil rights movement, and to social justice globally – from marching with Martin Luther King Jr and fighting against apartheid in South Africa, to raising money for famine relief in Africa and condemning Joseph McCarthy’s communist witch hunt.

Guildhall film programmer, Chloe Homer, said: ‘Following the huge success of our Black History Month film screening last year, we are delighted to be able to take part in the celebrations in 2012, and hope that the response from the public from all communities throughout Gloucester will be bigger and better than ever.’
