The lowdown: Independent health and fitness centre, Riverside Sports and Leisure Club, offers the chance for both members and non-members to get fit and tone up. The club caters for all types of gym-goers, whether you want to work up a sweat in the purpose-built gym, complete with a weight room, a body conditioning space, and two cardiovascular areas; join in with the group exercise classes; or swim lengths in the 20-metre indoor pool.
What’s on offer: The varied programme of fitness classes include circuits, spin, core sessions and Pilates, and are free for members to attend, while non-members can opt to join in on a pay-as-you-go basis. The sports hall, which is available to use on evenings and weekends, is a versatile space that can be used to play badminton, five-a-side football, netball and indoor hockey, while there are also three squash courts and four floodlit tennis courts where you can practise your swing. The centre’s educational programme spans an extensive array of courses, workshops and guest speaker talks that are specifically designed to promote health and fitness for the mind, body and soul. With communication, healing, self-development and spirituality all featuring in its diverse range of regular courses and events, you will leave feeling revitalised, refreshed and ready to take on 2018. Plus, the centre also runs The Isbourne College, offering a range of accredited courses for both holistic practitioners and those who want to learn more about alternative therapies.
What’s on offer: The eclectic range of courses include a variety of types of yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, creative writing workshops, meditation, Egyptian belly dance, aromatherapy, and more, with something to suit all ages and interests.

Pick up creative skills…

New Brewery Arts

Venue: New Brewery Arts
The perfect chance to: Learn a new craft and broaden your creative horizons.
The lowdown: Cirencester’s New Brewery Arts is a creative hub that’s home to a gallery and craft shop showcasing works by a host of designers, makers, craftsmen and artists, along with studios offering a wide range of courses for all ages and levels.
What’s on offer: The specialist education studios cover a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines, with participants taught in small groups to ensure they have individual attention from the experienced tutors, who are all professional makers in their own right. Choose from courses, which run for 10 weeks unless stated, and cover subjects such as millinery, stained glass, printmaking, watercolour painting, life drawing, sewing, digital photography and pottery, or opt to go on a workshop that take places over a few hours, a day or sometimes a couple of days. Workshop options include modern calligraphy, botanical drawing, Indian block printing, portraiture, and many more. If you want to encourage your children to get creative, then take advantage of New Brewery Arts’ regular Saturday club and after school sessions that are aimed at five to 16-year-olds, while there are also courses and workshops during the school holidays.
SoGlos loves: If you are booking onto a course that lasts a few days, take advantage and stay on-site at The Barrel Store, with the self-catering accommodation including 14 rooms spanning dorms, twins, singles and doubles, the majority of which are en-suite.
