Picking the perfect motor can offer up a whole host dilemmas for drivers, with the market offering everything from swanky modern motors to budget old bangers – an overwhelming range of options!

Whether you’re searching for brand new wheels, or opting for a second-hand drive, SoGlos has rounded up six helpful hints and tips for buying a car in Gloucestershire, whatever your budget.

1. Set your budget

With a whole host of marvellous motors on the market it’s always tempting to lean towards style over substance, and with garages and showrooms offering great deals, it’s all-too easy to forget the all-important finances.

Instead, shoppers searching for their new car will need to set a strict budget before they set their hearts on anything – and allow an extra £1000 a year for running costs such as fuel and insurance.

2. New or not?

There’s always a dilemma between opting for a swanky new saloon or a pre-loved car, with positives and negatives for both sides of the debate!

New cars are estimated to lose 30 to 40 per cent of value within three years, but many garages provide servicing offers and payment plans. Meanwhile anything from a classic Cadillac to a practical Prius can be cheaper to buy second-hand, but owners will inevitably inherit maintenance costs.

3. Sensible and sturdy, or flashy and fast?

It’s always important to weight up your needs; opting for a super speedy two-seater is great for leisurely motoring around the Cotswolds, but if you’ve got three children and a dog, it may not be the choice for you.

If your budget gives you plenty of freedom to choose whichever car you like, consider what you’ll be using the car for, where you’ll be driving, how many miles you’ll cover, and how much fuel you’ll be using.

4. Do your research

When it comes to choosing the perfect set of wheels, car dealerships can often sway your opinion with enticing offers, while fellow drivers tend to show a preference to one brand which can be hard to ignore.

Take your time to research what each model has to offer and read as many reviews as you can. If you’re buying second hand, always do background checks on the car; these will highlight if the car has been repaired from any accidents and also gives you time to get a quote for your insurance.

5. Take it for a test drive

Whether you’ve opted for a brand-new car or second-hand model, it’s always a good idea to test drive the car and getting a feel of the vehicle before making that all-important purchase.

Dealerships in particular may be pushing for a deal, but don’t feel pressured and rush what’s a big decision. Take your time, go for a test drive, and make a note of all the pros and cons until you’re certain it’s the car for you!

6. Make the most of the seasons

Be a savvy car shopper and take advantage of money-saving offers, with car dealerships often hosting flash sales to draw in the buyers.

With new plates released in March and September every year, make the most of great deals prior to the new plates coming out, and potentially bag yourself a bargain!
