KT Tunstall - Drastic Fantastic review

Album of the week – KT Tunstall is back with her long overdue second studio album, Drastic Fantastic, it’s a more rock-pop-tastic offering from the artist but how does it fair with the SoGlos.com team?

KT's latest album proves more fantastic than drastic.
KT's latest album proves more fantastic than drastic.

Need to know

Singer and songwriter Kate ‘KT’ Tunstall has come a long way from busking on the streets of Edinburgh with nothing more than a guitar to her name. The last three years have seen the Scot sell more than four million copies of her debut album Eye to the Telescope, win a host of BRIT awards and be nominated for a Grammy.

The name of her second album ‘Drastic Fantastic’ was thought up by the artist on a plane journey, as she says it makes an apt name for her comic book existence since striking fame.

Best track

The single ‘Hold On’ is an upbeat, infectious and energetic rock track proving KT’s capability of releasing chart-topping hits. Expect this one to get some serious air time over the coming weeks and months, with the catchy lyrics sticking in your head for a lot longer still.

Worst track

‘Paper Aeroplane’ is a melodic, yet disappointing end to Drastic Fantastic which lacks the energy and drive of her other tracks. Fans who have been waiting for the release of the solo artist’s new material since 2004 may feel a little cheated by this seeming after thought number.

One for the collection?

While KT Tunstall is renowned for her ability to pull off live performances with panache, Drastic Fantastic is a more refined and polished offering than her first album Eye to the Telescope and the days of her ridiculously successful ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’. If you’re already a fan her folksy rock number her second album will already have taken pride of place in your collection, but if KT didn’t do anything for you first time, spend the money on catching KT at her best – during her forthcoming UK tour.
