Please Re Tweet Me song launched
News - Engelbert Humperdinck’s ‘Release Me’ gets a modern social media makeover, as Drybrook Male Voice Choir sing ‘Please Re Tweet Me’ in aid of Gloucestershire-based charity the Meningitis Trust.
There’s a new challenger for the 2010 Christmas number one spot, as Engelbert Humperdinck’s 43-year-old classic ‘Release Me’ has been given a modern makeover – entitled ‘Please Re Tweet Me’ and now sung by the 30-strong Drybrook Male Voice Choir.
Dubbed as nothing less than a social media anthem by its creators, the spoof-style song will form part of a campaign to make people aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease meningitis – and it is hoped will take the YouTube and download charts by storm.
The original ‘Release Me’ lyrics have been rewritten to include major social networks and iconic digital brands such as Facebook, MySpace, Google and Twitter – with the ending directing viewers to the Meningitis Trust’s Facebook page.
Sue Davie, chief executive of the Meningitis Trust, said: ‘We want to reach out to a young audience and make them aware of the signs and symptoms, and what they should do if they are concerned. We live in a social media society and to reach them we needed to cut through with something memorable and shareable. ‘Please ReTweet Me’ appeals to an at risk group; if it helps save one life it will have worked.’
Commenting on the involvement of Drybrook Male Voice Choir, which has an average age of 50, musical director Sarah Waycott said: ‘It’s very special working with the Drybrook Male Voice Choir, they are a talented group of men who love music and have embraced the ‘Please ReTweet Me’ project. While they may not understand or use social media, they understand how the song can spread the message and help save lives.’
While Humperdink’s 1967 original reached number one in the charts and remained there for six weeks, only time will tell whether ‘Please Re Tweet Me’ nabs the top spot in aid of the Gloucestershire-based charity.
