Gloucestershire’s very own Gloucester Guildhall could be named Britain’s Best Small Venue in a national NME magazine competition, if it gets enough votes from fans before the closing date on Friday 10 June 2011.

Already the subject of incredible support from local people, Gloucester Guildhall has made it through to the next round of voting in the NME competition, with organisers saying ‘they need your support more than ever, as they face stiff competition in the south west category in the form of popular venues Moles in Bath and The Thekla in Bristol.’

The search for Britain’s Best Small Venue has been launched to highlight the importance of small venues to bands and the wider music scene, and will be judged by a panel of artists and experts as well as votes from the public, culminating in an overall winner being announced on Tuesday 14 June 2011.

Gloucester Guildhall has played host to big name acts including Muse, Primal Scream and Radiohead early in their careers, and while the venue expects to face stiff competition from similar venues across the UK, staff are certain they stand a chance if enough fans show their support.

Gloucester Guildhall spokesman Joe Schiavon said: ‘We work tirelessly to compete with much more established venues in cities like Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff to bring the best names to Gloucester and I’d like to think we do pretty well.

‘If you look at the list of bands we’ve had just in the last three years, acts like Lily Allen, Pete Doherty, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kate Nash, Klaxons… There are some massive names there, including BRIT Award and Mercury Music Prize winners. By winning this award, or even being short-listed, the level of decent bands we can attract will go through the roof!’
