Catch a special concert by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Cheltenham Town Hall – with works from Schumann and Elgar lined up.

The reputed BBC National Orchestra of Wales is coming to town.

Ever the local concertgoers’ favourite, Cheltenham Town Hall will once again be welcoming the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to its stage for a live performance on Thursday 7 March 2013, as part of its annual Concert Series.

The Orchestra’s principal guest conductor, Jac Van Steen, will be working his magic on Elgar’s epic ‘Symphony No.1 in A flat’, which organisers have described as being suffused with sombre and introspective undercurrents, despite its outward Edwardian pomp.

He will be accompanied by the distinguished pianist John Lill, who is sure to impress the Cheltenham audience with his performance of Schumann’s ‘Piano Concerto in A minor’, having been at the forefront of music making for more than 50 years.

Organisers said: ‘Schumann’s Piano Concert began life as a Phantasie for piano and orchestra. Later he reworked the music, adding an intermezzo and a finale, but the manner in which he transforms the opening theme confers on the work a sense of unity. It is deservedly one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire.’
