In 1962 the Gloucestershire town of Lydney was swamped with fans of one of Britain’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll exports, The Beatles, in a concert that went down in local folklore as one of the best nights ever seen at Lydney Town Hall.
And fifty years to the day after that historic show, on Friday 31 August 2012 to be precise, the venue will once again be filled with the sounds of the world’s most influential rock band when one of the UK’s most sought-after tributes, The Counterfeit Beatles, performs as part of a campaign to re-launch the Town Hall.
The tribute band, which counts Oasis’ Liam Gallagher as a fan, boasts not only headlining the main stage at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival alongside Coldplay, Elvis Costello and Primal Scream, but also starred in the stage production Beatlemania for Walt Disney’s award-winning directors Derrick Lasalla and Stavros Sideras.
Music fans can look forward to a journey through all the classic hits, beginning with the early days of ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’, to songs from the Rubber Soul and Revolver albums.
The show will then move from the Sergeant Pepper phase of psychedelic guitars to the White album, featuring ‘Hey Jude’, ‘All You Need is Love’ and ‘Back in the USSR’, before ending with songs from the Abbey Road and Let it Be era, such as ‘Get Back’ and ‘Come Together’ – with the band going all out in full costumes from collarless suits of the 60s to the same clothing the original band wore on the cover of the iconic Abbey Road album.
The Lydney Town Hall Management Committee has recently taken over running the 400-capacity Hall from the Town Council, and is hoping to raise funds through events like this to maintain and improve the venue to benefit local residents.
Colin Knight, chair of the Management Committee said: ‘Re-launching the Hall as the centre of social life in Lydney is our goal and I really couldn’t think of a better way to bring together the Hall’s past with its future.’
So don’t miss your chance to twist and shout with the residents of Lydney at a concert that’s expected to be remembered for another 50 years. Tickets go on sale on Friday 3 August 2012 from All About Eve and other retailers in Lydney.
