It’s that time of year again when the usually peacefully trickling River Windrush is invaded by two boisterous teams of local players, battling it out for victory in the annual Bourton-in-the-Water Football in the River match.

With more than 100 years of experience putting on a show-stopping sporting performance, hundreds if not thousands of spectators are expected to converge on Bourton-on-the-Water’s grassy banks once again for the highly anticipated 30-minute match on bank holiday Monday 27 August 2012.

Braving the chilly knee-high waters will be two six-a-side teams of players from Bourton Rovers Football Club, who will undoubtedly give the crowds plenty to cheer – and scream – about. Be warned, wear waterproofs if you plan on getting very close to the action, as splashing is all part of the fun and frontline spectators will certainly get wet.

For sheer entertainment and crowd interaction, the Bourton-in-the-Water Football match is one Gloucestershire event which cannot be beat.

Expect plenty of water fights and a few goals on the day. This fantastic picture from 1935 shows the annual event hasn't lost any of its popularity. No doubt the competitive teams haven't lost any of their drive to win either.
