Free swimming for the over 60s at GL1
News – GL1 leisure centre in Gloucester is offering the over 60s free swimming from 1 April 2009, as part of the Government’s swim4life initiative. Pre-registration for the scheme is open now.
Everyone aged 60 years and over will have the opportunity to take to GL1 leisure centre’s swimming pools in Gloucester absolutely free of charge from Wednesday 1 April 2009, thanks to the nationwide Change4Life campaign – which aims to get people to lead more active, healthy lives in the run up to London 2012.
GL1 leisure centre in Gloucester is one of almost 300 pools across England to take part in the Government’s free swimming scheme, as part of a £140 million programme lasting two years.
Swimming double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington said: ‘No matter what your age, swimming is an amazing sport and a great way to stay fit and healthy. I look forward to seeing pools up and down the country being used to their full potential.’
According to organisers, swimming is one of the most popular ways for people in this country to keep fit – with 30 minutes in the pool said to be worth 45 minutes activity on dry land.
It’s low impact, which makes it great for people who have problems with their joints or find exercise difficult, and now for the over 60s having a splash at GL1 leisure centre doesn’t have to cost a penny.
Registration for those aged over 60 to receive a Free Swim Card starts on Monday 16 March 2009, by either popping into GL1 leisure centre in person or signing-up online at aspiretrust.org.uk.
