Go fishing in Pittville Park

Event ended

From 15 June – With the new summer angling season just starting in Gloucestershire, keen enthusiasts and first timers alike are being encouraged to try fishing at Pittville Park in Cheltenham.

Nine months of fishing lies ahead of angling enthusiasts across Gloucestershire, with new fishing platforms and stations at Cheltenham’s Pittville Park promising to ‘reel in’ fans of the sport from across the county.

The four new fishing platforms and two specialist stations for use by disabled anglers were fitted in the popular park during the closed season last year.

All six places to fish will be used for the first time when the open fishing season starts on Monday 15 June 2009 until Monday 15 March 2010.

Cllr Paul Massey, cabinet member for sustainability, describes Pittville Lake as ‘one of the finest fishing locations in the whole of Gloucestershire,’ adding that ‘the new platforms have been carefully positioned to give anglers and wildlife enthusiasts the best possible access to the lake edge.’

Fishing has been permitted in Pittville Park for as long as anyone can remember, with eels, dace, pike, roach, carp, bream and sardines all being caught and thrown back.

If you are planning on giving the new facilities – or the sport of fishing anywhere else in Gloucestershire, for that matter, all anglers are required to have an Environment Agency rod licence, which can be obtained from the Post Office.

A council permit for fishing on the lake is also required at £6.20 for the season, and on the day anglers will also need to pay £3.60 for adults or £3.35 for OAPs and juniors, bought from Pittville Park’s boat house.
