Day six of the London 2012 Olympic Games saw Team GB win gold medal after gold medal in the canoeing, cycling and shooting events, and 25-year-old double trap shooter Peter Wilson can thank Gloucestershire-based Team GB Olympic Shooting coach, Ian Coley, for at least some of his success.
The local shooting school owner is renowned in the world of both clay and game shooting, having coached former British Olympian Richard Faulds to gold in the 2000 Sydney Olympics – and his latest protégé Peter Wilson has once again surpassed all expectations.
Not only did the Dorset-born sportsman shoot the world record at the Arizona World Cup event earlier this year, but he has made his coach and country proud once again by clinching gold at the London 2012 Games by a margin of two targets, hitting 188 clays out of 200 and narrowly beating close rival Holken Dahlby of Sweden.
Ian Coley had a chance meeting with the shooting star six years ago in Bisley, instantly spotting his potential. After signing him up, Coley put Wilson in the double trap development squad, which took him all the way through Olympic gold.
Ian said: ‘Words cannot describe my emotions from yesterday. From meeting Peter some six years ago, to winning Olympic gold, words fail me. Peter has shown the world everything that is great about sport and equally clay shooting.’
The whole nation held their breath as Wilson shot his final clay on Thursday 2 August 2012, erupting into deafening cheers as the Olympian sank to his knees, before a clearly emotional Coley was the first to run out and congratulate him.
‘Thank you to everyone who has supported us. To be part of Olympic gold in 2000 and now in 2012 has been amazing. Everyone has been a huge support, from my family, friends, those in the shooting world and outside of it – thank you,’ Ian added.
The Ian Coley Shooting School is nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds and ranks as one of the top 10 in country, having first opened back in 1987. It welcomes shooters of all ages and abilities, whether you are looking to try the sport for the first time, or have Olympic ambitions, just like Peter Wilson.
