Went along to Rise Helicopters on Saturday for the £20 ride. It was excellent and couldn't believe how cheap it was!...

The DODS cast of cabaret singing girls await audiences in Dursley for Sweet Charity.

The dedicated Dursley Operatic and Dramatic Society cast have spent months rehearsing for their performance of the musical Sweet Charity, which takes to Lister Hall in Dursley this May.

Based on the play by the prolific Broadway writer Neil Simon – one of the most performed playwrights in the world – audiences can expect to see a cocktail of cabaret numbers and sing-along romantic songs performed by the local cast.

With music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy fields and directed for DODS by Craig Hewlett, lead character Charity Hope Valentine, played by Emma Hitchings, embarks on a new romance with the charismatic Oscar, played by John Marshall, after they meet in a jammed lift in the New York YMCA.

Hooked on the idea that ‘Without Love, Life has no Purpose’, Charity’s bad choice of men come back to haunt her as her rollercoaster story is told through songs including ‘If My Friends Could See me Now’, ‘The Rhythm of Life’, ‘Sweet Charity’ and ‘I Love to Cry at Weddings’.

Joining Charity on stage are a chorus of girls who work at the sleazy Fandango Ballroom, who line up to greet each new customer singing ‘Hey Big Spender’ with each yearning to escape their seedy lives. The all-singing, all-dancing actresses also play the cabaret cast in the Pompeii Club.

Organisers promise an entertaining evening will be had by all at Lister Hall, so show your support for this local amateur dramatic group by giving them the standing ovation it sounds like they deserve.
