Anything Goes at Bacon Theatre
Until 12 July – Cheltenham’s Bacon Theatre will be the setting for Cole Porter’s Anything Goes this July, when a cast from local company Promenade Productions walk the boards.
First produced on Broadway in 1934, Cole Porter’s Anything Goes is a timeless musical which has been revived several times since in both the US and UK – as well as having been the subject of two movies starring the late, great Bing Crosby.
For four nights and one afternoon this July, Cheltenham audiences will be able to catch the musical for themselves, when local company Promenade Productions take to Bacon Theatre’s stage in a performance of the American composer and songwriters’ famous work.
Set aboard the S. S. American – a luxurious ocean liner bound for England from New York – in the 1930s, passengers will include an American heiress along with her mother and a frightfully English fiancé, a wealthy American financer, a gangster and his moll, a guy madly in love with the heiress and a nightclub singer with her backing group.
The complicated line-up makes for a farcical storyline and, coupled with frequent changes of disguise and romantic on-board entanglements – audiences are sure to see why this musical deserves its title, with renditions of well-known songs including ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’, ‘Friendship’ and ‘Anything Goes’ set to make this an enjoyable night out.
