Find out for yourself whether Bob Kingdom's new work does justice to the great Stan Laurel.
Find out for yourself whether Bob Kingdom's new work does justice to the great Stan Laurel.

While Stan Laurel – yes, the first half of comedy duo Laurel and Hardy – is well known as a legendary English comic actor, writer and director, award-winning performer Bob Kingdom will be unveiling his brand new play at Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre, hoping to reveal all in Stand Laurel: Please Stand Up!.

Taking place on Thursday 10 July 2008, organisers promise a funny and touching play which offers the opportunity to discover more about the man who began life as Stan Jeffersron, as well as how and why he became Stan Laurel – comedy genius.

With extensive research and assistance from Lois Laurel-Hawes (Stan Laurel’s daughter), the play aims to get closer than ever before to discovering the real man who made the world laugh – taking in boat rides with Charlie Chaplin and getting married eight times to four women, no less.

Kingdom’s previous shows were warmly received – including performances as Dylan Thomas in Dylan Thomas: Return Journey and Truman Capote in The Truman Capote Talk Show – but judging by initial reviews he might not have cracked playing the quintessential English comedian.

Whether or not audiences will be standing up to head for the nearest pub, only time will tell.
