To celebrate the bicentenary of legendary Victorian author Charles Dickens, the stunning grounds of Cowley Manor Hotel will play host to an alfresco performance of his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, on Friday 3 August 2012.
Gloucestershire-based theatre company, Jenny Wren Productions, which specialises in under-the-stars summertime performances, will be hoping to attract literature and theatre lovers alike with its Doc Watson adaptation of the dramatic tale.
The audience is invited to take along a blanket, settle down and join the jolly Mr Pickwick and his friend Mr Winkle as they journey around the English countryside in this well-loved story, which features all the classic characters, including the cheerful cockney Sam Weller, comic villain Mr Jingle and sleepy Joe, aka ‘Fat Boy’.
Organisers warn that the crowd may find themselves embroiled in a series of adventures, accidents and altercations – there will be fights, chases, elopements and even a trip to prison on the cards.
The grounds will open from 6.30pm for visitors to take advantage of the picnic food and drinks that will be on sale, and the performance itself will begin at 7.30pm.
