But, fun-hunting parents have unanimously seen to it that the places to take the kids when it rains hot list is the most-read story on SoGlos for the second year-running. With Christmas parties, fireworks and summer holidays all proving popular reads once again in 2016.
Clear hits with SoGlos’s foodie following, the exclusive news of The Daffodil’s shock overnight closure back in January 2016, as well as the breaking news of Wagamama Cheltenham’s launch in October 2016, were both brand new entries in the annual top 10 most-read.
Facebook has been a particular area of focus and growth in 2016 with SoGlos’s 11,000+ local Facebook followers increasingly engaging with our original content on the social media network. The Gloucestershire – SoSpectacular video reaching more than 450,000 people, notching up 218,000 video views and being shared in excess of 3,200 on Facebook alone, for example.
But, for the purposes of 10 of your most-read SoGlos stories in 2016, we have included unique reader statistics gained from Google Analytics across the online magazine over the 12-months only – with some stories reaching tens and even hundreds of thousands of additional people on our social media channels too.
Read by a phenomenal 63,014 readers in the past 12-months, and shared in excess of 25,000 times, SoGlos’s evergreen guide to wet play proved an essential read for parents across Gloucestershire for the second year in a row. Perfect for dodging downpours…
The festive guide dedicated to fun for the grown-ups snatched the second most popular position on SoGlos, with the 2016 Christmas party guide being read by more than 38,127 readers. A further 23,009 festive revelers also gained Gloucestershire New Year’s Eve guide inspiration in 2016.
Back for the third year in a row and with more than £6,000 worth of glorious prizes up for grabs, a huge 38,828 people read the Great Advent Giveaway article on SoGlos in 2016. Plus, ran exclusively across Facebook during the first 24 days of December, SoGlos's giveaway reached an impressive 404,428 people on the social media channel in the run-up to Christmas!
Christmas is a huge time of the year on SoGlos, with a whopping 38,026 readers finding inspiration from the Magical places to meet Santa hot list during the festive period. The Gloucestershire Christmas Shopping guide, meanwhile, was read by 29,264, closely followed by the Gloucestershire Christmas events guide which was read by 25,138, and Gloucestershire Christmas gift guide which was read by 19,862 people.
SoGlos’s breaking news story about the overnight closure of The Daffodil, one of Cheltenham’s most popular restaurants, went viral in January 2016 – being read 37,296 times on the online magazine, as well as being shared almost 15,000 times on social media. Another big local food story which stirred up a social media storm in October 2016, was the SoGlos exclusive that Wagamama is set to open in Cheltenham, which was read by more than 33,906 readers.
Cheese rolling is a local, ahem, sport that has achieved global notoriety in recent years despite taking place ‘unofficially’ since 2010, with SoGlos’s event preview being read by 37,460 readers in 2016 and approaching 45,000 shares. Our own Cheese rolling videos having been viewed more than 10 million times (10,248,725 views at the time of writing!) on the SoGlos YouTube channel, and in 2016 we featured the first drone footage of the quirky event.
An explosive guide year-after-year, the Gloucestershire fireworks and bonfires guide was read 32,210 times in 2016, with the event preview of the Cheltenham Racecourse fireworks display itself reaching a sizzling 19,156 readers alone.
Everyone loves a freebie, with 50 free things to do during the summer holidays handpicked by the SoGlos team for one of our most popular hot lists, which was read by 30,152 people in 2016. The Gloucestershire summer holidays guide, meanwhile, was read by an impressive 29,652 people – filling the six weeks with plenty of fun in the sun ideas over the summer.
Featuring some of the world’s finest independent schools, SoGlos’s independent schools guide was read by 28,049 people in 2016 – proving parents are doing their homework when it comes to choosing the right education for their child.
With four fixtures still to enjoy at Cheltenham Racecourse this season, SoGlos’s bespoke guide to the horse racing fixtures at Prestbury Park has already been enjoyed by 27,520 readers, being shared more than 20,000 times – with the big Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup still to enjoy in March 2017!
