Adding a personal touch to your wedding day

From designing your own dress to creating a unique photo-sharing hashtag, there are endless ways to add a personal touch to your wedding day, as SoGlosWeddings explores...

With all the hard work that goes into planning a wedding, it can be easy to forget to put your own stamp on your special day, particularly if you’re going for an inclusive package.

But personal touches, no matter how big or small, are what make your wedding unique to you and can be the perfect way of expressing your personalities and creative flair.

Rather than choosing just one overall theme, fill your day with little details that will make it all the more memorable and give guests something to talk about for years to come.

From small details like writing your own vows to possibly the biggest thing a bride could imagine – designing her own dress, personal touches can even save cash, although they do tend to take up more time and effort.

SoGlosWeddings has come up with a few ways any bride and groom with a little imagination can make their mark on their wedding day – without breaking the budget.

Design the dress of dreams

While you might not be the next Vera Wang, creative brides-to-be wanting that one-of-a-kind couture look on their wedding day can design their own dresses, with more and more bridalwear shops offering a design service that gives brides control throughout the entire process – and it’s not as costly as you may think.

During an initial consultation, you’ll be able to either show the designer a sketch or picture of the dress, or explain it to enable them to bring it to life on paper, after which you’ll discuss embellishments, fabrics and most importantly, budget.

The designer will then take all of the vital measurements and get to work on creating your dream dress, which could take up to 9 months. There may be the odd fitting during this time, and of course, when the dress is complete, after which you’ll have your very own couture gown that ticks all the boxes – and leave with a smile knowing that you’ve got the only one in the world.

A truly unique ring

Your wedding ring is a symbol that should last a lifetime, so make it all the more special and design your own! Many jewellers offer a bespoke service, allowing couples to discuss their ideas and budgets, which can vary wildly depending on the type of metal and stones.

There are endless possibilities when designing your own ring, spanning the type of metal; width of the band; intricate details, patterns or milgrain embellishments; dual tone precious metals; a high polish or matte finish; modern or antique styles.

One of SoGlosWeddings’ favourite ideas is adding a secret detail on the inside of the band, such as a secret message, special date or even fingerprint, which adds to the rings’ uniqueness.

Design your own stationery

If you’re feeling particularly artistic, or you know someone who is, consider designing your own wedding stationery. Not only can you save heaps of cash, but it’ll give you complete control over everything from the colours to illustrations, allow you to set a personal tone for the day and is sure to impress your guests!

There’s plenty of inspiring ideas for creating truly unique stationery, whether that be save the date cards, invitations, orders of service, a table plan, or the guest book. Creative couples can choose their own colour schemes, fonts and illustrations, all of which can be sourced online.

The actual design process can be carried out with snazzy software such as PhotoShop, Illustrator or InDesign. Or if you really want to push the boat out, you could event create a simpler design and have your stationery laser cut or letterpressed.

Personalised favours

Long gone are the days of giving guests a little bag of sugared almonds as their wedding favours. Today, many brides and grooms are choosing to get creative with what they gift their friends and family.

Not only can personalised favours carry through the theme of the day, but provide a great conversation starter and a unique keepsake for guests to treasure.

From homemade edible treats and floral delights to personalised playlists and donations to a special charity, there are countless ideas for more personal wedding favours – your imagination is the only limit.

Create your own hashtag

Take advantage of social media and the opportunity to access all of your guests’ photos at the click of a button! Whether it be for Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, create a unique hashtag for your wedding and ask guests to post this alongside their photos taken throughout the day, giving everyone the chance to experience it from different perspectives.

You can include the hashtag in your invites or create a cute chalkboard or photo frame sign displaying it on the day to encourage guests to get involved.
