Getting married voted one of life's happiest days

Walking down the aisle is one of life's happiest moments according to a new survey which quizzed over 70s about the best days of their lives.

Life is full of exciting moments and according to new research by online insurance company Beagle Street, tying the knot is one of life’s happiest days.

The survey polled 1,000 people aged 70 and over about the best days of their lives and revealed that the birth of a first child was voted the happiest moment closely followed by saying ‘I do’.

The findings mark the release of Happiest Moments, a new short film produced by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Gary Tarn. The film was commissioned by Beagle Street following their research which found that loving relationships are key to long and happy lives rather than money and material gains.

Those polled were also asked to offer advice to the younger generations about leading a happy existence with the most popular pearl of wisdom ‘never take the people you love for granted’.

Happiest Moments stars three of Britain’s oldest couples who have all celebrated their diamond wedding anniversaries and then some, including Maurice Kaye, 102, and his wife Helen, 101, who have been married for 80 years. In the charming short film the couples look back on poignant moments in their lives with refreshing honesty.

Curious to know what else made the list? According to the survey the top ten happiest life moments are:

1. Birth of a first child (12.3 per cent of vote)
2. Wedding day (11.5 per cent)
3. Birth of grandchildren (10 per cent)
4. Birth of another child (8.5 per cent)
5. Day of retirement (7.4 per cent)
6. Moving into a new home (6.7 per cent)
7. Seeing your child’s first steps (5.5 per cent)
8. Hearing your child’s first words (5.4 per cent)
9. Meeting the man or woman of your dreams (4.5 per cent)
10. First kiss with the man or woman of your dreams (4.4 per cent)
