7 creative ways to propose in Gloucestershire

Ditch simply getting down on one knee and plump for an altogether more creative wedding proposal, with 7 ideas to steal from SoGlos.

If booking a table for two at a romantic restaurant, hiding the ring in the dessert or pretending to tie your shoelace before getting down on one knee is just a bit too conventional for you, SoGlos has seven proposal ideas for an altogether more creative way to pop the big question.

1. Write it in the sky

If you want to go big with your proposal, it doesn’t get much bigger than writing it in the sky on the back of plane banner. A perfect way to let your loved one – and the rest of the world – know your feelings, while it isn’t a cheap option, there are in fact aviation companies at Cotswold Airport who will fly your message across the county skies.

2. Spell it out with stones

For the super-romantic – and super-organised – spend some time gathering stones and writing a huge ‘marry me’ message with them at the bottom of a beautiful location, such as Leckhampton Hill or Selsley Common. When you take your loved one for a walk, have them look down to read your message and wait for the tears of joy – and hopefully a ‘yes’ – to flood in. Pack a picnic, and plenty of fizz, for that extra romance factor.

3. Hit the big screen

With private cinemas available to hire exclusively, take your beau on a date night to watch a romantic movie at The Screening Rooms in Cheltenham or Barnsley House Hotel in the Cotswolds, and give them a blockbuster moment they would never have imagined! Perfect for film buffs and those who are a sucker for a happy ending, organise for your special proposal message, sequence of soppy pictures, or even specially-crafted video to be shown on the big screen during the trailers – for a proposal worthy of a Hollywood plot.

4. Go treasure hunting

Combine the love of your life with your love of the great outdoors and send your partner on a most modern treasure hunt – with the big question found at the end. There is a plethora of stunning settings around Gloucestershire already part of the Geocaching craze, so pick a special spot and hide your personal message beforehand for a prize they won’t be expecting and a story they will ‘treasure’ forever.

5. Oh yes you can!

To pop the question with a liberal sprinkling of show-stopping sparkle, take inspiration from the charming panto proposal at the Everyman Theatre, when actress Kelli Maybank, who was performing in Sleeping Beauty, was proposed to on stage – resulting in a unanimous chorus of 'awwws' from the audience. More recently, Giffords Circus also saw a sweet proposal in the ring too.

6. Animal encounters

If you’ve been inspired by the Penguin proposal at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, follow suit – literally – and dress up to surprise your beau. Put them in a flap at Barn Owl Centre in Gloucester, snap up a ‘yes’ at Crocodiles of the World, near Burford, or make your mooo-ve at Cotswold Farm Park!

7. Be a sport

Did your love stem from your mutual love of sports? Whether you’re big Cheltenham Town supporters, cheer on Gloucester at every Kingsholm game or never miss a hockey match, get in touch with your favourite team to find out if they would put your proposal message on the score board – or perhaps might let you get down on one knee on the pitch at half time. Alternatively, you could get your fellow fans to spell it out, Mexican wave style – we’d love to see the supporters in The Shed share the love like this!
