Guide to sizzling summer weddings

Couples planning a sensational summer wedding can find some useful tips and tricks for their big day with SoGlosWeddings' guide, covering everything from alfresco entertainment to bad weather plans.

With the Great British weather famously unpredictable, planning a summer wedding can be tricky – hoping for the best while preparing for the worst!

SoGlosWeddings is lending a helping hand with this seasonal guide, encompassing advice for sizzling summer days and wet weather alike.

Summer showers

Prepare for the worst

Whatever season you’re holding your special day, it’s near impossible to predict the Great British weather, making it important to prepare for sudden showers, grey skies or chilly winds.

Keep your fingers crossed for the best but prepare for the worst – get some umbrellas to protect the bride from downpours, find an indoor ceremony space as a backup in wet weather, or even have a marquee; this allows for outdoor celebrations with cover if needed.

If it’s been bad weather before the big day, a change of shoes can be useful, and make sure that the wedding party are able to help protect the all-important white dress from any muddy patches or puddles.

Layer up

Even if the sun is shining throughout the day, it’s always a good idea to have some extra layers in case of chilly spells in the evening. The bride can keep things glam with a gorgeous bolero, stylish shrug, or cute cardigan, for example.

It’s getting hot out here

Preparation is key

The budding bride and groom will have their fingers crossed for warm weather; if their wishes are granted, there are some simple steps to ensure that no one gets too hot and bothered.

The bride can ensure she’s looking fresh as a daisy despite the hot weather thanks to a supply of backup beauty products; setting spray for makeup, hairspray, deodorant, and perfume can help to protect against potentially sweaty situations.

Meanwhile for the men, a change of shirt allows for a quick and easy change, while dropping layers such as waistcoats allows for the groom, ushers, and wedding party to cool off!

The perfect picture

A bright blue sky looks fantastic in real life, but bright sunshine can create difficulties for the wedding photographer. Think ahead and plan some shots that aren’t going to be affected by glare, or talk to your photographer about what they have in mind to avoid the problem.

A fantastic feast

Sipping on summer drinks

Summer sings of chilled bubbly, classic British favourite Pimm’s, and refreshing cocktails. Whether you’re partial to a classic G&T, minty mojito, fruity peach Bellini, or smooth Pina Colada, serve up a tantalising tipple that guests can enjoy in the sunshine.

Alfresco dining

What better way to complete a summer’s celebration than dining in the sunshine? A sizzling barbecue or garden party picnic are lovely British traditions which will go down a treat with guests.

Food or drink van

A food or drink van is a lovely addition for summer weddings; from ice-cream trucks to fish and chips, serve up tasty treats that guests can enjoy in the sunshine. Adding character and a little festival feel, there are endless options, whether you want to serve pizza or Prosecco.

Bright and beautiful

Theme your big day

Go all out with a theme fitting for your summer wedding. There’s plenty of choice to complement a summertime celebration. For example, add beach and nautical elements; host your very own festival; create a garden party; or go all out with a Mardi Gras-esque carnival theme.

Brighten things up

Summertime sings of beautiful colours, whether that be blooming flowers, lovely lanterns, colourful cakes, bold bridesmaid and usher outfits… the list goes on!

Even if the sun isn’t shining for the whole day, bright colours are a great eye-catching effect that promises to enhance the summer theme.

Better safe than sorry

Stay hydrated

It’s only too easy to get distracted when there’s bubbly around, but on a hot summer’s day, staying hydrated is definitely important. Avoid headaches and wedding day slumps by sipping on water throughout the day – and make sure there’s plenty for guests too.

Somewhere shady

Alfresco drinks receptions are glorious in the sunshine, but to avoid getting too hot and flustered, make sure to catch some shade too! Cool down under cover, take some time inside during the day, or opt for a chic sunshade.

A great job for bridesmaids or groomsmen – carrying sun cream! Keeping your skin protected might not be at the forefront of your mind during the big day, but you don’t want to be burnt and uncomfortable for those all-important pictures.

Take things outside

Fun in the sun

Couples planning on an outdoor reception can ensure guests stay entertained with some garden games. From giant jenga to croquet, encourage some friendly competition and have heaps of fun with the wedding party.

Outdoor seating

Take advantage of the warm weather (fingers crossed!) and arrange to have an outdoor seating area, if there isn’t one already in place. Whether it’s asking the venue to move chairs outside, or planning something characterful like hay bales, it’s perfect for letting everyone soak up the sunshine.
