The Boxing Day Bibury Duck Race is back again in 2019, so wrap up warm and cheer on your duck when the festivities get underway in aid of local charities.

Bibury’s annual Duck Race is one of Gloucestershire’s more unusual traditions, drawing crowds from far and wide each year on Boxing day, and 2019 will be no exception.

Every year at around 11am on Boxing Day, the picturesque village of Bibury is transformed by hordes of spectators, who manage to peel themselves off the sofa and away from the tins of Roses, to watch as thousands of plastic ducks float down the River Coln for two exciting races.

The first sees 150 decoy ducks float down the river, which as well as being a great spot of festive fun, can raise thousands of pounds for charity, as spectators can sponsor a duck for £10 each – with the person whose duck crosses the finish line first getting to nominate which charity they would like all of the day’s proceeds to go to.

The second race involves more than 2,000 yellow plastic ducks being unleashed upon the river, with spectators being able to sponsor these for just £1 each – and prizes guaranteed for the first 20 and final duck to cross the finish line. Past prizes have included a delicious dinner for four, bottles of Champagne and whiskey, and even an oven-ready duck.

For spectators wishing for a Boxing Day with a twist, this unusual festive tradition is not-to-be-missed.
